School-Based Sports Initiatives

The British Columbia government supports many initiatives designed to help young British Columbians learn skills and participate in physical activity and sport.

  • Action Schools BC! – this elementary school physical activity model encourages more kids to be more active, more often.
  • Healthy Schools – the British Columbia government and its partners are working to help make British Columbia students the healthiest and most physically active in Canada.
  • BC School Sports – this organization of member schools encourages student participation in extra-curricular athletics, assists schools in the development and delivery of their programs and provides governance for interschool competition.
  • External Sport Credits – grade 10, 11 and 12 students who compete in major games and competitions can earn credits toward graduation. Other sport and recreation disciplines (such as scuba diving certification available through the Sport and Recreation Branch’ s Aboriginal Youth FIRST program) are eligible for external credits or independent directed studies.
  • Premier’s Sport Awards – a physical education resource program designed to help teachers and community instructors teach children (ages 8 to 14) their basic sport skills.
  • SportfitBC – an online sport education program that promotes healthy, active lifestyles by matching students’ personal preferences and physical attributes with winter sports.
  • SportWeb – online resources for athletes, coaches, organizations, administrators and parents, including athlete handbooks, club management, event management, coaching guides and other “how to’s.”
  • Student Athlete Achievement Project – provides “how to” guidance to schools to help them provide more flexible programming that will allow students to excel in both academics and athletics.
