Long-Term Athlete Development
Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD) is a
training, competition and recovery framework for
individuals at all stages of life. While it
focuses on an athlete's competitive development
- that is, learning the fundamentals and how to
train, compete and win - LTAD also integrates
early-life movement skill development and
post-competition "active for life" concepts into
life-long participation in sport and physical
activity.
Canadian Sport for Life - a LTAD plan developed by
the Canadian Sport Centres - had its roots in British Columbia. The model, developed by the Sport and
Recreation Branch was
implemented and tested throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
This model is now being rolled out nationally.
LTAD's life-long stages of participation and
development include:
- Active Start
- Fundamentals
- Learning to Train
- Training to Train
- Training to Compete
- Training to Win
- Active for Life
