Sea to Sky Corridor Recreation Trail Strategy
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts (MTCA) is
pleased to present the final Sea to Sky Corridor
Recreation Trail Strategy.
With the unprecedented growth in the region, the
proximity to the lower mainland, competing stakeholders,
and complex land use in the area, a comprehensive
strategy to provide guidance on the management of our
trail system was needed. MTCA’s Sea to Sky Recreation
District, as the land managers responsible for
authorizing public recreation on Crown land in the Sea
to Sky Corridor, has been working with consultants,
local governments, First Nations, and stakeholders to
develop this trail strategy.
This Strategy focuses on identifying key actions that
if undertaken will support the realization of a “well
coordinated, sustainable and environmentally responsive
trail network spanning the Corridor, managed for the
benefit, health and prosperity of a diverse range of
users.”
Highlights of the Strategy include:
- Provides a framework for legal authorization and
establishment of the vast majority of previously
unauthorized trails on Crown land.
- Recommends a process and organizational
structure for ensuring a Corridor-wide coordinated
approach to management of the extensive trail
network.
- Identification of key program requirements to
ensure an environmental responsive trail network.
- Considers threats to sustainability of different
portions of the network and identifies opportunities
and actions required to ensure a sustainable and
economically beneficial network.
- Recommends action for addressing issues related
to integrated land use, risk management, trail use
conflict as well as funding and resources.
- Outlines and recommends trail construction,
maintenance and sign standards and guidelines.
- Is consistent with the Draft Sea to Sky LRMP as
well as locally developed trail management plans and
strategies.
