Heritage Planning Overview
Heritage conservation is about the management of a
community's past for future generations. Heritage
planning is the process of deciding how to manage that
inheritance.
Heritage planning must be closely linked to other
community planning and development activities. In most
cases, local governments manage heritage initiatives
through their planning departments.
Heritage planning roles
In community heritage planning, as with community
planning generally, planning leadership usually falls to
local government.
The role of the provincial government is to build
capacity for heritage planning and stewardship at the
community level. To achieve this, the Province has set
legislation and policy enabling local governments to
plan and implement heritage conservation programs.
Heritage planning resources
Through its
Community Heritage Planning Programs, the
Heritage Branch provides advice and financial assistance
to local governments, including the establishment of a
Community Heritage Register.
Another planning resource is
Heritage BC, which
serves as the principal voice for community heritage
interests throughout the province. The society provides
support to community non-profit heritage organizations
around the province through its
training programs and
other services.
The
Cultural Resource Management Program at
University of Victoria and the
City Program at Simon
Fraser University both provide specialized
post-secondary training programs in heritage planning.
