Archaeology

Notification Letter

Local governments should notify development proponents of archaeological concerns using the Provincial notification letter supplied here by the Archaeology Branch.  Local government staff check the appropriate box and forward the letter to the proponent.  The letter informs the proponent of their responsibilities and directs any further questions to a professional archaeologist or to the Archaeology Branch.

There are two versions of the notification letter:

If archaeological potential mapping is available on RAAD for your jurisdiction, you should use the three-box notification letter [60kb]which includes the following scenarios:

  • Direct Overlap with a known archaeological site
  • Direct Overlap with an area of significant archaeological potential
  • No identified overlap

If archaeological potential mapping is not yet available for your area, you should use the two-box notification letter [58kb] which indicates that the local government is unable to assess archaeological site potential.  This letter includes the following scenarios:

  • Direct Overlap with a known archaeological site
  • No identified overlap
